Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program
The Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (CLPPP) is funded by a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which supports the coordination of lead poisoning prevention and surveillance services for children in Michigan, and the funding of pilot sites for primary prevention of lead poisoning through the identification of lead hazards in housing and the use of special environmental cleaning techniques to minimize lead hazards.

Program service components are education and outreach; blood screening and testing; tracking; reporting; primary prevention activities; policy development and program management; quality assurance; and evaluation. Infants, children under six years, and pregnant women are priorities for screening and testing.
A state-local agency approach has been developed, which includes the following components:

Kent, Ingham, Genesee and Wayne County Health Departments, and the Field Neurosciences Institute (Saginaw) are funded for community-based, prevention activities which include the identification of young children at risk for blood lead poisoning, monitoring blood lead levels of children above 10 ug/dl and assuring follow-up of children with blood lead levels above 20 ug/dl. |

The City of Detroit Health Department has a CDC CLPPP grant and funding from the MCH Block Grant for the identification and follow-up of lead-poisoned children. |

The majority of local health departments which have childhood lead poisoning prevention programs provide environmental investigations (2), nursing, health, and nutritional assessment (2), and follow-up via local funding and Medicaid. |

Medicaid funding for screening, environmental, nursing, health education, and medical services. |
